Is it necessary to leave gaps between bars in a bar graph?

Because I need to draw a bar graph for my science coursework.

Short answer: yes.

Longer answer:
Bars represent discrete data points or classes.
If the gaps are removed...the data will appear continuous.

    Yes, otherwise the graph will be a histogram. (there is a difference)

    No - you see graphs in serious news reports all the time with no gaps between the bars. But of course your teacher may have a personal thing about gaps.
