With luminosity rating of class II (blazing with the brilliance of 15,000 suns) Canopus is a supergiant of spectral type F star. Life span of suppergiants are, at the most, about 30 million years. Though its exact age is not yet known, its great mass dictates that it must be near the end of its lifetime. I mean, Canopus has lived in the fast lane and is destined to die young: probably between 15 to 20 million years old and would live another 5 to 10 million years more before it dies.

Although its exact age is unknown, Canopus’ great mass dictates that this star must be near the end of its lifetime, and is likely a few million to a few tens of millions of years old. Compared to our sedate middle-aged five-billion year old sun, Canopus has lived in the fast lane and is destined to die young.
