What is the difference between Haute Couture and Avant Garde?

Haute Couture means high culture, in other words, the best designs, tailoring, materials.
Avant garde refers to the leaders of the pack, the front-runners, the advanced guard, so it means the very newest designs, something that anticipates trends, something that could be what people are following next.

Haute couture is a French term for designer clothing for rich idiots. Avante garde is another French term which describes another new way of expressing oneself in society that is not conventional.

These are the French words for High Fashion as opposed to Advance Guard, which is supposed to be new, exciting , perhaps arty and weird, trying new things for effect, which are not the mainstream fashion practices..think meat dresses of Lady Gaga..
Haute Couture is real investment clothing which is beautifully made, especially for the famous fashion houses, by the most skilled seamstresses in the business..these are often made to order for their private and exclusive clientelle..no off the peg, stuff here, Pret- a- Porter, is off the peg, diffusion range clothing, which is available to anyone who has enough money, and is in select boutiques only, but still well made, and of current designer's vision..I hope this helps..
