    It must be compatible with your motherboard.

    It must be compatible with your power supply (if the power supply isn't powerful enough, the computer will crash)

    It must be able to physically fit inside your computer case.

    Generally, if you have an Intel processor you want to go with a nVidia based graphics card, while an AMD will work better with an ATI based graphics card.
