I know "New Scientist" is a popular science magazine for the general public and it has been known to get things wrong, and it is not a learned journal and the articles that appear in it are not peer reviewed.

Good article. The best example of evolution I've seen is a family in South America who all have six working fingers on each hand, that work perfectly. It actually appears to be an improvement, and it shows how large leaps can happen in one generation, by slightly altering the way the code is read or something.
