Yup, it's true. Google the Balfour Declaration. Basically the British promised the Arabs independence from the Turks (the Ottoman Empire) in return for their help in World War 1. The Turks were allies of Germany, and the Turks ruled the Arabian Peninsula at the time. The Ottoman Empire (Turks) is very old. The Arabia Peninsula was not divided into countries in the time of the Ottoman Empire - It was just one seamless landmass known as inclusive of Saudi Arabia, Syria, Jordan.
The Middle East did not look the way it does today. There were not as many countries as it is divided today - It was just one landmass.
At the end of World War 1, when the Turks and Germans were defeated, the British and French began dividing the Arab Peninsula - resulting in the state of Isreal to establish a Jewish homeland.
