Why can't I access Windows Update, after a clean install of Windows XP / SP3 Home Edition ?
As required IE8 was installed after the Windows XP / SP3 installation.
Automatic updates are functioning, various websites can be accessed except Microsoft.com.
Processor: Intel(R) Celeron(TM) 1.2 GHz.

If you installed a new operating system you MUST create a network connection because you wiped the old one out.
Go to the control panel/network and sharing center and create whichever connection you want to use. Make sure while there that the adapter is listed - look at change adapter- to be sure either the LAN adapter is selected or the wireless adapter is selected. Remember to click to connect at the end of set up. You will need your security key and wireless network name.

are you serious ?
support for xp ended on April 8, 2014
it is no longer supported BUT
there is a registry hack to trick the system in to thinking it is embedded xp,
for which updates are still available.
open notepad, then copy and paste the following in to it:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
Then save it to your dektop as xp.reg
next Double-click xp.reg and click
when you're asked if you want to include this information in the Registry.
Click OK when you get the confirmation message
and you're done.
Now run Windows Update from the Start Menu and you'll see that you've got extra,
new updates to download and install.
you should continue to recieve updates untill 2019.

MS site no longer allows IE8. XP is dead, I'd suggest you install a linux flavor instead.
