There were two Balkan wars. The first was from October 1912 to May 1913, and Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia and Montenegro fought against the Ottoman Empire and forced them to give up most of their European territory. In the second Balkan War, Bulgaria did not like how the land was partitioned out after the first Balkan War, so they attacked Greece and Serbia in June 1913 and the war lasted until August 1913. Romania and the Ottoman Empire also chose to attack Bulgaria when the war broke out and in the end, Bulgaria was forced to give up a lot of their territory to these countries.

Sister Augustine Bewicke on the Macedonian autonomy

    January 4, 1919

    St. Paul's Hospital, Salonika

Dear Sir, Please excuse the liberty I take in writing you, it is because the final settlement in the

Balkans is of vital interest to the Catholics in these countries. - I have been 33 years in this mission, the Uniate Catholic Mission, which at the beginning of the Second Balkan War counted about 10,000 Catholics. The Treaty of Bucharest, which divided Macedonia without any regard to justice, was the cause of these poor people being dispersed on account of their Slav language, which was forbidden in Churches and schools. - The Bishop had his residence in Salonika, he has now been in exile more then 3 years, his priests are dispersed, his flock is indeed without pastors, nor do we have any hope of his return to any place under Greek or Serbian rule. - The Greeks will not admit the Slav language in Churches or schools; the inhabitants of Macedonia are in the great majority Slavs; they call themselves Macedonians, and what they desire and what we ardently desire for them is an autonomy under European control. - I whatever way Macedonia might be divided; the people would be always discontented, and would fight again as soon as possible. The only hope I can foresee is in strong autonomy, which neither Greeks nor Bulgarians nor Serbs would dare attack; then the Macedonians, who are really intelligent and docile when they are well treated. would peacefully develop this beautiful fertile country... Surely Europe will not leave Macedonia under people whom the Macedonians hate, and whom they will continually fight...

    The War of Macedonian Heritage.

Balkan redneck newborn countries since their establishing (Greece 1835, Serbia 1830, Bulgaria 1878) started to look out of their boundaries in Macedonia, still occupied under Ottomans. So, even with their population starving, Balkan neighbor countries started to spend enormous amounts of money to est. schools, libraries and churches in Macedonia in three languages: Greek, Serbian and Bulgarian. Very often all three in one village! The same Macedonian family has been divided in three nations - the father and mother declared Serbian, children Bulgarian or Greek,. All this was "supported" by armed gangs of intruders of three countries in Macedonia.

So, the Balkan wars started 1912, against the Ottoman Empire.

The Second Balkan war happened 1913, between the allies.

Macedonia has been divided and separated in Bucharest, August 1913.

The Balkans are a unique area in Europe. It's a mishmash of many peoples and tribes with different religions and culture and a flash point of discontent. You have German, Austeria, Hungarian, Slavic people such as Serbs, Sovlika, Croatians Monternagros, Albanians and Bosinians. The land was control by Roman Byztine Russia and Ottoman Empire as well as Greek Austrianian and Hungarian. So there are many people who are completely different with Eastern Orthodox faiths, Catholics, protestant and Muslims

Economically the Area is stronger together but the differences are so great that there is a clash of whether to be a single nation Yugoslavia or many small independent states. Before WW 1 Serbia wanted a single state of Slavs called Yugoslavia which came about after ww2.

Franz Ferinad had a wonderful idea for the Austeria Hungarian Empire and unified country based on American model of different states but it never came to be. To answer your question after the Soviet collapse Many small minorities wanted independent nation states. The Crackdown by Serbia Milosevic was brutal and you had a very bloody was in the 90's that ended with America bombing Serbia and Making Kosovo an independent nation recognized by Europe but not by Russia. The war was really one sided but there is a unique feature that soviet air defence was able to shoot down one of America most advance air planes the F-117 a stealth fighter.
