    # 3 shows the batteries in series, which combines the voltage of the 2 batteries, giving 12 volts.

    #1 is a parallel connection, which provides twice the battery life, at the rated voltage of the batteries, It would provide 6 volts, not 12

    # 2 is basically a short circuit, all you would get is fried wiring or batteries.

    # 4 would provide no power.

    Parallel or series. Depends on what you use them for.

    If it's parallel you connect anode of one to anode of the other and cathode of one to cathode of the other. Then connect either anode and either cathode to the device you want to run.

    If it's series, you connect anode of one to cathode of the other Then connect the device to the open anode and open cathode.
