Since umps don't have balls, MLB provides them with balls and pouches to carry them in.

For extra baseballs, and baseballs are what they pit in them.

  • The home plate umpire wears a pouch on his side to hold extra baseballs if one gets fouled off and out of play.

Extra baseballs. Whenever one goes out of play (foul ball, home run, wild throw, etc), the home plate umpire has an extra to throw to the pitcher so the game can continue.
