I'm an old white guy, and it half bothers me and partly doesn't. I think it means big changes for everybody ahead, both good and bad. But I can't see any moral and legal way to stop this from happening. I'm not going to turn into a damned racist or a Nazi wannnabe because I'm nervous about black folks or Latinos or Asians moving onto my block. My white parents and my white minister at the Presbyterian Church taught me better values than that.
I think we white people better make a big effort, really soon, to make friends with our nonwhite neighbors. I hope we're not idiots or filled with guilt as we try to do this, because white guilt and gullibility won't help anybody.
But it's like the Bob Dylan song: "The Times They Are a Changing." As Dylan put it in that song,
we need to "start swimming, or we'll sink like a stone," and part of our "swiming" will have to include developing better relationships with people of ALL races.
