I have no reason to think he's a junkie.
I have every reason to believe that he's detached from reality, but a lot of people are. I live in a country where since 9/11 there have been about 500,000 gun deaths--almost entirely Americans killing Americans--and yet we spend trillions of dollars on defense, worrying about ISIS, who have probably killed less than 100 Americans total, all over the world.
Someone like JimZ is worse than Solar Wind, in my book. I don't think Solar Wind has much formal background in science--I've asked him about it several times and he has never answered me. So, like Kano, when he reads crackpot papers they sound reasonable to him. But with all his talk about how it's "cooling", pretty much everyone knows that Solar Wind is a crackpot, but I don't think people understand that JimZ is just as detached from scientific reality as Solar Wind.
While Solar Wind reads papers by crackpots, as far as I can tell JimZ reads nothing at all on science these days. For his "expertise" he relies on what he learned in high school (I think he was some kind of star there) and what he half-remember from majoring in geology. He has said before that he pretty much hasn't looked at science textbooks since then, and whatever physics and math he studied back then he has since forgotten. All that wouldn't be so bad, except he spreads misinformation--giving the wrong value for water vapor abundance, getting the effect of CO2 in the ocean exactly backwards, or just making pronouncement on how much warming there will be due to CO2 based on absolutely nothing. He bothers me more than Solar Wind or Kano, because he has the background in science to understand it, but his obsession with right wing extremism is so great that these days he won't even look at something scientific if it might conflict with his view of the world.
