The Nazis made more of an impression in western Europe, where people actually experienced their cruelty and saw people killed etc. The Soviet atrocities, terrible though they were, were more remote from us here. Moreover, the soviet Gulags, horrible though they were, did not kill people on the scale of the Nazi concentration camps. I read that the death rate in the Gulags was perhaps as much as 30 percent, which of course is terrible, but not as terrible as the 90 percent death rate in the Nazi concentration camps. On a scale of horrors, the Nazis seem to have exceeded the Soviets.
