It's called the Substitutionary Atonement. Christ offered Himself for all of mankind, whoever would or should take Him as their Lord and Saviour. Christ was The God-man. He was fully divine, and fully human. He was the One prophesied by God from the beginning -- Genesis 3:15; Deuteronomy 18:15-19, 22; Isaiah 53. As a member of the Godhead (along with the Father and the Holy Spirit), the Son of God, Jesus Christ, has offered Himself since before Creation to be this once in a world's life time the substitute sacrifice for all of us. In God's prescient (all knowing) mind, He (all three members of the Godhead) foreknew that mankind would fall, and would need a Saviour. So in the preCreation time frame, Christ offered Himself to be the One -- in some ways you could say it's like God accepting the blame of sin upon Himself, for allowing its existence, and He wants to offer Himself for our sakes, and take all our punishment upon Himself. But it can't be just a mental acknowledgement of Him as your Lord -- you have to develop a relationship with Him, and continually dwell in His Word, the Bible (my personal knowledge leads me to believe the King James Bible is the best we have in English). Matthew 4:4; 2 Timothy 2:15; Psalm 119:105. His written Word is how the Living Word (Jesus Christ) comes into our lives and hearts and lives through His Spirit within us. These are the Words or Oracles of LIfe.
