Trump will continue to do stupid things as long as he's allowed to be President.
Another answer says that "Congress has the power of the purse..." and yet when Congress specifically did NOT authorize money for Trump's Wall, he stole the money from other government programs. That would leave oversight as the other duty left for Congress, but Trump is refusing to comply with Congressional subpoenas. In other words, Trump is trying to take the powers vested in the Congress by the Constitution. This comes after Mitch McConnell refused to hold confirmation hearings for Merrick Garland, allowing Trump to pack the Supreme Court with judges specifically selected to do his bidding. He's done the same thing with the Attorney General.
So what we have is a President that is trying to grab as much power as he can from what were designed to be co-equal branches of government, because he doesn't want to be an ordinary President, he wants to be a dictator, and the Republican Party is complicit in this power grab.
As for the trade war, he is taxing the American people (that's what a tariff is) and taking and giving some of that money to his voting base (farmers). The way he's gone about his trade war is completely ill-advised, but I don't think he listens to advisers that don't have talk shows on Fox News.
