The real issue, and the uncomfortable reality for Americans, is that their dominance is coming to an end. China is destined to not only have the biggest economy on the planet, but also the strongest military. That is going to be a chastening experience for Americans ... you won't be the biggest boy in the school yard.
This is a time, I would suggest, where we need stronger links between the US and Europe, Australia, Canada, and Japan. None of us can compete with China in the future but we can form closer trade arrangements, we can form allegiences in everything from R&D to corporate tax collection.
The problem is that Trump is a divisive President who seems intent on looking inward. It will all sound great for a while, until Americans realise the real slogan isn't America First but America Second to China.
