are horses a lot of work?

    If you have a pasture and a shelter and water, the cost would be very little .

    Yes, but the work is as hard as you make it. Daily chores, weekly chores, biannual health checks.

    Not very cheap either.

    Well, yes, if you want to keep them in decent, healthy condition. Their supplies and food are costly, as well as veterinary costs, and they do require frequent grooming and riding (or some kind of exercise) if you wish them to stay healthy.

      That's not accurate, unless you happen to live in a tropical climate where grass is available year round. Most horse owners in the US don't have that luxury, unless they live in the Deep South or in southern California. In northern localities, horses must be fed hay if they are to survive the cold.
