Do you believe Hamilton really had an affair with Maria Reynolds?

His wife was from a very powerful family, that could easily destroy him or even kill him. Also in that time adultery was punished with prison time.

Would you believe it was a cover up for a financial scandal?

As you've pointed out, the repercussions of having an affair would have been extreme. More extreme than admitting to doing some prospecting while he was in the government. So it would have made no sense for Hamilton to write out a false confession to the affair after his political career was already over.

With the sheer amount of animosity between Jefferson, Burr, and Hamilton, it seems unlikely that they would be involved in some scandal together. Even more unlikely that Burr and Jefferson, who despised Hamilton, would let him off the hook with a false confession to an affair.
