Would Japan have won WW2 if the US didn't have or use any atomic weapons?
- 6 months agoBest answer
From what I know, Japanese military and navy were in hopeless condition by the time U.S. dropped the atomic bombs. This is because in 1944 U.S captured the Mariana Islands from Japan. Since these islands were near Japan, it meant that Japan could now be a reached by plane. U.S. used these islands as airbases and intensely bombed majority of Japanese cities between 1944 & 1945. Also after all that, the Soviet Union joined the U.S. against Japan in august 1945. So even before any nuclear bombing, Japan was facing an impossible military challenge on 2 fronts.
To be honest, I came across claims that Japan was researching nuclear weapons around 1945. I think it was cancelled either because it did not make progress or because the war was already lost.

No chance , they were already on the back foot , but i would have been a much different ending for Japan if the US hadnot drop the bombs , Was it justified , I really dont think so

No, it would have taken more time money and lives but America would have still won.

No, we still would have won eventually but at a much bigger cost. But Operation Downfall would have cost the U.S. far more troops and money that we would have got Zero Commonwealth support for. Japan wanted a fight to the last man, that was their war motto they were training civilians men, women and children of generations with spears to combat the Allied forces. Another thing to consider is Japan was working on the Atomic bomb in a nuclear power plant on the Korean Peninsula(Occupied by the Japanese). They were also planning to use chemical and biological warfare against the West Coast in Operation Cherry Blossom at Night. The USSR also wanted a land grab of Japanese islands and occupied territories and the island of Hokkaido, had we not dropped the bombs the Soviet Union would have annexed and split up Japan much like the Soviets did with Germany and Korea in WW2.
Us dropping the Atomic bombs ended the war and saved millions of lives much more on the Japanese side.

Oppenheimer brought US enough uranium in his U-boat to make the bombs for Hiroshima and Nagasaki just as we were getting Nazi scientists to accelerate our Manhattan Project. It was touch and go.

Caused more expenses too

No, they were defeated, all the way back to their home islands, they were starving, fuelless and hopeless and they would have fought to the last man causing millions on both sides to die

No. Japan was beaten beyond the point of recovery but they would not surrender. The war might have gone on for another couple of years or maybe Japan would have eventually surrendered after the US destroyed city after city with conventional bombing. The first way would have cost the lives of tens of thousands more US servicemen and the second would have cost more US lives and probably far more Japanese lives than were lost in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It would have taken the country dozens of years to recover if they had lost Tokyo and other industrial cities.
Nukes are terrible. Their use taught the world that they shouldn't be used again and so far, they haven't. But their use saved tens of thousands of American and Japanese lives.

No way. By the time the A-bomb was ready, Japan was already losing. They were trying to negotiate a cease-fire so they could surrender and negotiate a peace treaty. Our side said they wanted -unconditional- surrender but we let them keep their emperor, which was all they really wanted.
Our govt. said it would have cost 1 million allied lives to invade the home islands of Japan, but I think most historians these days believe that's hype. When we did take over Japan, there was not one single insurgency! Can you imagine that when we've been fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq for decades after 'winning'?
