For people who are struggling with deviant thoughts and fantasies - the church might seems like a 'safe space'. But temptation will win out in the end IF they do not confront those temptations head on. [Which is true for all of us] The church needs to be far more willing to accept that the desire to sin doesn't go away just because a person accepts Christ into their heart. In fact - I think that's when temptation becomes especially aggressive. And people need to feel it's OK to openly share their struggles.

Opportunity. And the incidence of sexual abuse is highest in HOMES, committed by fathers/significant others.

Protection of pedophiles who are employed, or voluntarily engaged within church institutions happens because the men in charge of those churches think the reputation of the institution is more important than protecting children.

This is the case in hundreds of religious denominations, para-church groups where there are children, sports clubs, athletics clubs, political groups, music academies - anywhere there are children that pedophiles can infiltrate and get access to children. We are now discovering something of the sickening extent of this cancer in our societies; it is global, it is institutionalised, and it is fed by pornography and the idea that sex is just for fun and anybody can have sex with anybody they like. Pedophiles have sunk one rung lower by not getting consent.

Pedophilia is also a contagion that spreads due to the violated children having their lives so ruined that they often become sexual abusers of others, later in life. It is spreading more horrifically than cancer. But, back to your question. It may be that some of the people who protect pedophiles in their religious organization are pedophiles themselves, or they don't think sex abuse actually is an abuse.

In religious organizations it is appalling given what Jesus said about those who make a child stumble - it would be better if those adults had a millstone tied round their necks and be flung in the sea, rather than violate children. Jesus then described the horror of the hell that awaits such people. Read Matthew 12:34-37 & 10:26-28. They are all going to get charged. And judged accordingly. Jesus then described the horror of the hell that awaits such people. Read about it in Matthew 18:1-11 & 19:13-14. But all those sexually depraved people, and those who try to cover up their sin, will be exposed on the Day of Judgment "when everything hidden will be revealed". See also Matthew 12:34-37 & 10:26-28. They are all going to get charged. And judged by the highest authority - the one they claim to be serving.

You seem to be unaware that school teachers have a higher rate of abusing kids than any other group.

The same reason for sex abuse anywhere and everywhere. Sex abuse is gross sexual immorality. It is not restricted to children although that is the most reprehensible form of it. Elderly, children, women, men, boys, girls, relatives - all become victims of sexual abuse. As for in the church, a person who is bent on sexually abusing children will go where the children are. Churches, parks, schools, relatives, boy scouts, girl scouts, sports.

The reason for sex abuse and sexual immorality is people have no morals, they reject God's boundaries and laws and they are greedy for badness. And men promote depravity. See 2 Timothy 3:1-5; Psalm 12:8 and Ephesians 4:19. They are past all moral sense - they feel no moral pain whatsoever. They are scarred and calloused and have given themselves over to brazen conduct to practice every sort of perverted uncleanness with greediness.

The church's insistence on celibacy is chiefly to blame.

There wouldn't be so much of it if they'd just stop making those alter boys look so attractive.
