Could Gay Men serve their country?

In 1940s etc in Military or Navy

Of course I guess there was no real way of knowing about sexuality but I believe if men were found to be gay, they couldn't join?

Many famous men served in military/navy in 1940s, either during the war or after

George Peppard, Paul Newman, Lee Marvin, Henry Fonda, Audie Murphy etc

But what about Marlon Brando, who was similar age? Was he maybe Ineligible to join because he was gay?

In my country at the time, men had to serve in war or armed forces (national service) it was compulsory, i don't know about America

In the United States a person with a homosexual orientation is not disqualified on that basis. President Clinton began the policy of 'don't ask, don't tell' in which the military did not seek the answer to that question and as long as you didn't offer the answer, then you could serve. President Obama in 2015 lifted that policy and began to allow gays in the military under equal terms to heterosexuals. There remains a question as to the whether transgender persons would be more disruptive to operation than any value they bring, that is currently being debated.

Historically: prior to WW2 there was no written policy, but in the military and in civilian law 'sodomy' was a serious crime, so the presumption was that a gay person would be at some point likely to break a law that was considered a felony. After WW2 the military made policy that sought to prevent any homosexual behavior in the military as they believed it was disruptive and not in line with the military code of ethics.

There have always been gays in the military, in law enforcement, etc. I’ve known two gay guys who had affairs with gay NYC cops. They have a gay fraternal organization in NYPD called the Guardians

According to Marlon Brando' Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marlon_Brando

"He tried to enlist in the Army, but his induction physical revealed that a football injury he had sustained at Shattuck Military Academy had left him with a trick knee. He was classified 4-F and not inducted."

As for your country, which is the United Kingdom: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_orientation_a...

"Until 2000, the British Ministry of Defence (MOD) policy was to continue the long standing ban on homosexuals joining any of the Armed Forces, most recently being based on a 1996 report by the Homosexuality Policy Assessment Team, which asserted that to allow gays in the military would be bad for morale, and leave them vulnerable to blackmail from foreign intelligence agencies.

" In September 1999, this court ruled that investigations by military authorities into a service person's sexuality breaches their right to privacy. In light of the ruling, the MOD subsequently lifted the ban, and began allowing gay people into the services from 2000 onwards."

"The British military actively recruits gay men and lesbians, all three services have deployed recruiting teams to gay pride events, and punishes any instance of intolerance or bullying. "
