It might interest you to know that in 2018 Beto O'Rourke had the highest contribution from Exxon Mobile over 90,000 clams and Ted Cruz was a distant second at $34K. The sad truth is Washington is a swamp and they demand their tribute or they punish any corporation foolish enough not to contribute.

Political funding must come from one of three sources: Lobbyists, taxpayers, or the candidates themselves. Pick your poison.

Same thing Green Energy companies get when they invest in politicians. They're investing in a vote for their interests.

    Short answer:

    whatever they want

    Longer answer:

Usually oil companies will offer huge donations to candidates, with the "understanding" that the candidate will now have a more relaxed stance on environmental protection policy. This could range from something as broad as national emissions standards, to something a specific as drilling in a specific protected area. This, combined with other factors, allows oil companies to maintain a large market share in U.S. energy production.
