Is the Speaker of a poem the author if they use "I" and "we" in the poem?

    No. When a poem is written in the voice of another person it is called a "persona" poem. It's very common.

    The author may be writing the narrative of an imagined chararacter/ or of more than one character..

    There is only one Robert Hayden, so the pronoun is 'he' not 'they' (which is plural)

    Presumably if he refers to 'I' and 'we', he is the speaker.
