Why do some singers lip sync?

Can they not sing properly or is it just laziness?

I think a lot of the time it is because they aren't great at singing and dancing around the stage at the same time. Its pretty hard to do and if they aren't strong vocally some will opt to just lipsync and give a better visual performance.

In the past, (the mid 1990's) it was because the 'artist' couldn’t sing at all (research Milli Vanilli). Some artists who are honest about the practice (like Madonna, who acknowledges that she does lip sync during her concerts) do so because their songs are difficult to sing while dancing as they do.

In music videos, what appears to be lip syncing is in fact a dub over of a live recording

They are just some talentless manufactured singers who are not working hard to be a famous.

It could be for any number of reasons that they do.

A lot of the music produced in studios cannot be duplicated on a live stage.

    No chance for errors.

Both are possible and do happen. Sometimes, they just book too many concerts, and there's no way they'd be able to handle that many if they actually had to perform at all of them. Having vocal cord nodules the size of golf balls is probably fine if you're Bruce Springsteen, but not so much for the average pop singer.
