Agricultural economy required bigger families so kids could help out on the farms. Also more kids died of childhood diseases so parents had more kids to cover themselves

They obviously didn’t have birth control yet so
The pill wasn’t invented until 1960 and back then it was more harsh and had worse side effects, it’s much better these days
They also had a lot of kids to help out on the farm and because people usually died younger and got sick because of terrible nutrition and living/environmental conditions — they were weak and sickly and had basically no immune systems

Farming? People needed larger families to help work the farm. . . Planned parenthood? Planned parenthood was less facilitated in some ways. . . Belongingness? Do we meet the need to belong today through other means?

Birth control could be spotty or, for mechanical means, illegal.

FAMILIES WITH ONLY CHILD WERE VERY RARE BACK IN THE OLD DAYS BECAUSE OF THESE FOLLOWING FACTORS:
1.) NO BIRTH CONTROL
2.) NO FAMILY PLANNING
3.) LACK OF EDUCATION
4.) MORE CHILDREN, MORE WORKERS FOR THE FIELD
5.) RELIGION: GO AND MULTIPLY
6.) HIGH INFANT MORTALITY RATE
7.) MORE CHILDREN, HIGHER FAMILY SURVIVAL
Exactly the same reasons as currently happens in the third world, except nowadays instead of 1 or 2 out of 10 children surviving, it's now 8 or 9, which is the reason for the massive population explosions in Africa and India.

the "olden days" is such a broad term it can refer to any time period of any length. fix it.
You just commented on my answer. So you already know I answered.
No reliable contraception. |Plus the notion that you should have several children in case some of them died young of all the unpreventable diseases which were around in those days.
