If the Frasier River mountain headwaters had only tribal

and 1919 Era settlements polluting the water please be

informed the discharge of melt-water included 500+

glaciers in addition to temperate rain forest weather .

Drowning your concern to a pittance. It now serves

largest population of British Columbia without your

presumed troubles. Nor did water purification

    technology stand ignored by Canadians.

People had Wells, springs and Cisterns---not to mention CITY water supplies in 1920. They knew about germs and sanitation and did not drink from rivers then

If you read history books, it seems one thing you find out is that they were sick a lot and a lot of times their cures were worse than their sickness.

As easily as you could survive drinking the Flint, Michigan, municipal water.

Boil the water or get your water from a spring or well.

Dilution, mostly, but also some natural degradation happens. The risk of disease or health effects depends on the stream and the amount of defecation. This is the basic idea behind the long-practiced pattern of taking water from the upstream side of town and dumping the sewage on the downstream side, although clearly, as you point out, anyone downstream from that city will be taking in water that was contaminated by that city's sewage discharges.

When populations were small and sewage dumping was relatively tiny compared to total stream flow rates, the impacts down stream were relatively small as well.

Boil the water. It gets rid of impurities.

Fish the turds out of your bucket with your hands and let any small particles settle to the bottom...you'll be just fine. Drink up.

People didn't defecate into a river. It's called an outhouse.

Actually, people still do it today. That's what spreads schistosomiasis in the Middle East.
