Sauce and gravy are not the same thing.

Gravy is always made from meat drippings.

Any other liquid served with the food is a sauce.

To me, gravy is a specific type of sauce, made from meat drippings, water and a thickening agent. I put gravy on meat, potatoes, rice, noodles.

Any other type of flavoring sauce I call sauce.

I come from a town with a large Italian-American population, and in many of those families, the traditional 'Sunday sauce' is called gravy.
