Why did Buzz Aldrin have the title of "Lunar Module Pilot" when Armstrong was actually doing the piloting of the LM?

While Neil was flying the craft, Buzz monitored the status of the vehicle, and supplying that information to Armstrong so he didn't have to look at the instruments and take his eyes off the landscape he was flying through.

    • His eyes were on the dials and feedback from the LM. He was in charge of radar (do you remember the 1201 & 1202 alarms? Buzz should've deactivated the rendezvous radar, but didn't). While Neil adjusted attitude and throttle, Buzz controlled the computer, and fed information to Neil as necessary.

That was one busy cramped cockpit. All three crew members

had assigned responsibilities on the landing of the craft. The

lunar module had a command pilot yes.

Bet you never knew the entire crew has exactly the same training.

    Aldrin was mission commander.

You should read his book, very detailing, stuff you never knew.

By all accounts.........Landing the Eagle was a DUAL effort. Aldrin read off readings, while Armstrong kept his eyes on the LZ surface. One man trying to do both probably would have led to a crash. Trying to land by readings alone, probably would have led to a crash. As they got close enough, Armstrong could make a better visual and see that the LZ was actually quite rocky and uneven.

It had to be a pretty harrowing few minutes.

  • Quantum did answer the question, and with fact. If you don't like the answer, that's for you to deal with. If you don't like the fact, take it up wth NASA, although I doubt they'll retrospectively change the crew's titles now.
