Carbon dioxide is called a greenhouse gas because?

carbon dioxide is not the most powerful greenhouse gas, it is the largest contributor to climate change because it is so common. In order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, we need to reduce the amount of fuel we use in our cars, homes, and lives.

by definition:. a greenhouse gas is any gas that exists in the atmosphere and can absorb UV radiation thereby trapping heat.
CO2 is certainly capable of that. So are
.. water vapor
.. nitrous oxide
.. various chlorofluoro carbons
in fact, water vapor accounts for about 93% of all greenhouse effects. And the majority of CO2 is naturally occuring. But that doesn't fit the APGW story does it?

It is transparent to visible light but absorbs longer-wave light in the infrared. Light energy comes in from the sun, but can't easily get back out when radiated from the earth.

Like the glass of a greenhouse, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere allows sunlight through to strike the earth but provides insulation/reflection when the resulting heat is radiated back from the earth. Instead of escaping into space, the re-radiated heat is trapped by the carbon dioxide, just as happens in a greenhouse.
The trapped heat is mostly absorbed by the oceans but the trouble is that ocean temperatures have a BIG effect on weather patterns. Warming oceans and a warming atmosphere mean that climate patterns change so we get more frequent hurricanes, stronger storms, rains falling in the wrong places so so people get flooded while others suffer unusual drought.
There have always been small variations in weather patterns but we are seeing a sustained change in a particular direction and the cause has been shown to be linked to the presence of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
