Eating dirt could be a sign that the animal is lacking in some kind of mineral or minerals. See Vet help, this is not good.

Dogs that aren't supervised eat all kinds of things. Why don't you supervise your dog?

My dog actively seeks out deer feces to roll in and eat. I have to get rocks out of her mouth on a daily basis. I honestly have no idea.

Depends, some pups/young dogs lick/chew anything including dirt in exactly the same way as a human baby/toddler will to find out about the world around them.... if it is something they repeat then it is likely they have a vitamin. mineral trace element shortage and that is down to a poor quality diet
