Why is it that Yahoo answers always screws up the automatic category selection on this forum, whenever you post a question?
For example, I posted a food, related question a few minutes ago, and they automatically categorized it has a question about reptiles. What is that all about?

Its Because the System Generates a Category Based on Key Words so if not the Right Words are being Used Yahoo may not Pick the Right Category for It
Of course you can Fix it After its Posted by going to the Blue Edit menu and Click on the Edit Category Button then Select the Right one and Click Submit

Mainly because of key words.

For the same reason spell checker often substitutes the wrong word when auto-correcting something. They're computer algorithms, not a mind readers.

Anyone posting a question should check as soon as it's posted, to make sure it's in a suitable category. If it isn't, you can - and SHOULD - move it.

please learn the difference between a comma and a hyphen.
Because the algoritm that places anglo-questions in a category is simple and often gets it wrong.
In the german-speaking pages it's still up the asker to pick a category

Your question wasn't about food. It was about an app for grocery shopping. The flaws it has has nothing to do with food. The problem is you (as it probably almost always is). Software would be a more appropriate category.

It's about an imperfect algorithm and the fact that every user has the ability to re-locate their own questions when the algorithm doesn't get it right. That's also why you see some users preface their questions with the subcategory they want it to go in (e.g., Food, Polls, Politics, etc).
Technology is imperfect and if you consider how little maintenance and updating has gone on, on this site in the past few years, it's actually somewhat amazing that the % of questions that land in the correct subcategory is as high as it is. (after that, any Level 7 may relocate it to be helpful or malicious)

Are you talking about your question about Publix Instacart?
Y/A autopicks a category based on what words it can decipher in the question you initially ask. Y/A doesn't understand what Publix is or what Instacart is - which are probably the two key words it used. Why it picked reptiles as a category I have no idea. If you had said something like "Publix grocery store" in your question it may have pick grocery as the key word and picked a more appropriate category.
You need to keep in mind that Y/A is global. Publix is primarily limited to Florida in the USA. The guy in India writing the code that deciphers key words in your question has no idea what "Publix" or "Instacart" is. Therefore they don't exist in the lookup table they are using for category selection.
Bottom line it boils down to how well your write your question.

Yahoo think they know better than the person asking the question.
