Why isn't there a Thompson sub-machine gun with a built in silencer?

After market suppressors are not uncommon, Thompson just never configured the 'tommy gun' for that.

Not much call given they are intended for combat/battlefield.

Silencers don't work with hypersonic projectiles usually seen in assault rifles and rifles in general

Some companies today make suppressors for them and other sub-machine models such as the UZI or MP5 have had them as well. Back in WW II, the M3 sub-machine gun was fitted with a suppressor for OSS or OSE usage. Thompson's were mostly issued for battlefield conditions and did not require or need a suppressor. Or if used by law enforcement or gangsters/criminals were not likely needed to be suppressed.

It is not possible to silence an automatic or semi automatic gun. The blow back from the chamber makes it impractical to try to silence them.

In "Three Days of the Condor", assassins used a silenced .22 submachine gun. The armed forces probably have them.

"Three Days of the Condor" is a movie, and the book it is based on ("Six Days of the Condor") are both FICTION.

Part of the reason is the loud gun scares the hell out of people and most will duck for cover. A quiet gun will not have that effect. Plus silencers do have their own set of problems, it is better to have a loud gun that works than one that is quiet that could jam up.
