2 dishes of water in a 38° fridge. 1has asparagus in it, 1 is a control. Water with asparagus freezes. The control stays liquid. Why??

what was the control liquid? Pure water is supposed to have a HIGHER freezing point than water with some stuff dissolved in it

Freezing asparagus ....
Chances are that if you swap the two dishes, the freezing will reverse as well. In many refrigerators, the fridge portion is cooled by cold air (below freezing) from the freezer portion. It's possible that the asparagus dish was placed in the down draft of the ultra-cold air from the freezer.
Some refrigerators have a meat and cheese drawer which is colder than the rest of the fridge. If one plate is sitting on top of the meat drawer then it will get colder and potentially freeze.
Revise the experiment by placing the dishes in a box so that they are isolated from direct contact with the colder air. Also, place multiple dishes with water and asparagus at different locations in the refrigerator.

Water should never freeze at 38° F. The two dishes might actually be at different temperatures. Try switching their places or put a thermometer in each dish. Another possibility, did you start with frozen asparagus?

did you put thermometers in each dish? Fridges have a wide variation in temperature with location. I see no reason for the first to freeze if the temp is actually 38ºF.
Or, repeat the experiment with locations swapped.
