Why do women say this but men do not?

Women talk about their friends as ‘girlfriends’ eg I went shopping with a girlfriend yesterday. Yet a (straight) guy will never say ‘ I had a drink with my boyfriend’ why the difference and who is correct?

Because men are so homophobic they're afraid to just sit next to each other on public transit for fear of people thinking they're gay. Homophobia is the reason.

Because women are a lot less likely to say I went drinking with the girls when men always say I went drinking with the boys. Many find girl derogatory and they find it better even to mask it as girlfriend

Women aren't as phobic as men about same-gender anything.

I'm a straight guy and no way would I ever refer to another guy as my "boyfriend".

I don't say "girlfriend" it is weird--unless I was dating that girl-she's my friend--not my girlfriend--not sure how that whole usage thing happened-I also think it is odd.

They're both "correct". Language is not always perfectly consistent.
