Water heater question?

Inside a water heater, is there insulation like the itchy stuff in there? where there ever?

    Yes most water heaters have itchy pink fiberglass insulation between the hot water heater and the casing

    They used to have fiberglass between the jacket and the tank. Now they use blown in foam.

    In between the jacket and the tank there most certainly is.

    yes. it is between the outer shell that you see and the inner tank that you do not see. Sadly, it isn't very thick and thus isn't too effective

    Insulation on water heaters is always external.

    you may find that kind of insulation on the outside of older water heaters, but its a major fire hazard so it hasnt been done for a long time

    there is insulation inside the tank to keep the water hot but its a completely different kind of insulation
