What are some bands similar to Pink Floyd?

I absolutely love Pink Floyd music and I try to get into other bands but none of them give me the same kind of spark. I know Led Zeppelin could be seen as similar, but I find it hard to get into them. What album or songs would you recommend by them?

There is no band that you can call similar to Pink Floyd. David Gilmour had a unique tone on his guitar work, and what came out of Roger Waters' head when he wrote is uniquely Waters.

The closest you can try to come is to listen to some other progressive rock bands of the late '60s - mid '70s era that don't have a uniquely-identifying musical style. I'm not saying not to investigate these bands, in fact, I think you should. It's just that one particular instrument or the lead singer will instantly tell you it's not Floyd"

    Yes

    Emerson, Lake & Palmer

    Jethro Tull

    Focus (Dutch band)

Led Zeppelin (was not prog rock per se but did venture into that genre with later albums, still, they are nothing like Floyd)

I would give a listen to:

    The Soft Machine

    Caravan

    Camel

    Nektar

    Earlier King Crimson

    The Moody Blues

    Renaissance

  • You basically want to fiddle about with soft rock prog bands from the 70s.

    Porcupine Tree

I listened to Pink Floyd throughout the 70's and 80's but when PF faltered in the 90's Steven Wilson & Porcupine Tree were there to pick up where PF left off and excel. IMO Floyd was never this good. All of their albums are great but personal favs are Lightbulb Sun and In Absentia.

Led Zeppelin are nothing like Pink Floyd!

There's a band called Mostly Autumn that are heavily influenced by the Pink Floyd and there is some similarity between the music of the two bands. I guess that some of the stuff by King Crimson is sort of similar (although the guitar sound isn't). Try Starless or even their first album - In the Court of the Crimson King.

My first thought was actually the band mountain!! suggested - Camel. My favourite albums are Breathless, Raindances and Nude.
