I’m tired of bright and happy musicals. Has there ever been a dark and disturbing musical?

Ever heard of Pink Floyd - The Wall or Oliver Twist or Sweeney Tood? You must have.
You could also watch The Who and Ken Russell's Tommy. Even Quadrophinia

The "wizard of oz" is a modern dark disturbing. Quite actually if you understand the theme behind it.
But unless you are asking for stage which is quite different from film, you actually need to study "silent film" for real dark disturbing.
You are supposed to introduce your own theme music to background the film.
Silent is the way to go for dark disturbing in film since that period was quite different from modern especially considering special effects.
Now a days its so easy. But back then...

Hedwig and the Angry Inch isn't exactly bright and happy; it's more colorful and very strange. But, one of the best I've ever seen, with very good music.
