A few fast tips - cut caffeine and reduce salt. Avoid prepacked or processed foods - they are loaded with fat, salt, sugar, and calories. Read labels - if you can't pronounce something in it - don't eat it. If it has more than five ingredients - don't eat it. The food you are eating should be fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and meat. Dairy products should be skim or low fat choices.
Cut portion sizes. Be sure you are eating the correct portions of the foods you eat. Your calorie goal should be at about 1500 calories if you are getting at least 30 minutes of exercise per day. If you have no activity at all, then you might be able to eat 1200 calories per day and still avoid going into starvation mode. YOU DO NOT WANT TO TRIGGER YOUR BODY INTO STARVATION MODE. It will ruin your metabolism.
Spend at least 30 minutes per day walking. Speed walk if you can. You don't need to go to the gym to burn calories or get a "workout" but you do need to get out of your chair.
