How much force would it take to break obsidian?

    It depends on the thickness of the piece. A thin piece will break in your hands. A large piece will chip fairly easily with a hammer or other rock, but won't break in half easily without a swift blow from a sledgehammer.

    Obsidian (volcanic glass) would fracture easily because, like any glass, it is very brittle. Moh's scale of hardness rates glass at 5.5.

    not a lot since Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass
