# Another maths question: 4/5 - 3/10 div 1/2 = ?

Relevance
• i presume you are required to solve

the sum using paper and pencil.

3/10/1/2=3/5

4/5 -3/5 = 1/5

BODMAS is the sequence operations.

• 1).

4/5 - (3/10 / 1/2)

= 1/5

2).

(4/5 - 3/10) / 1/2

= 1

• 4/5 - 3/10 / (1/2)

PEMDAS (BOMDAS) do division first

to divede, invert and multiply

4/5 - 3/10 *(2)

4/5 - 3/5 = 1/5

• You need to use parentheses for clarity.

Do you mean 4/5 - 3/10 ÷ 1/2 ?

Or 4/5 - 3/10 ÷ (1/2) ?

Or (4/5 - 3/10) ÷ (1/2) ?

Or something else?

• The question asked has shown no parentheses but assuming parentheses is used on division 1st.

• I don't know what you wrote. Don't you know how to use parentheses?

• Sorry but no parentheses was shown on the test paper question but I assume division 1st.

• Assuming that you mean :-

4/5 - ( 3/10 / 1/2 ) = 4/5 - 3/5 = 1/5

Just in case you mean :-

( 4/5 - 3/10 ) / 1/2 = (5/10) / 1/2 = 1

PS

You must make clear what you mean.

• You have omitted some parentheses, too. The 1/2 should be (1/2).

• As written:

4/5 - (3/10) / (1/2)

Divide first, turn to multiplication of reciprocal:

4/5 - (3/10) * 2

4/5 - 3/5

Then subtract:

1/5

----

If you meant for the subtraction to be done first, then you need parenthesis around them:

(4/5 - 3/10) / (1/2)

(8/10 - 3/10) / (1/2)

(5/10) / (1/2)

(1/2) / (1/2)

(1/2) * 2

1

• (4/5) - (3/10) / (1/2)

= (8/10) - (3/10) / (1/2)

= (5/10) / (1/2)

= (1/2) / (1/2)

= 1
