For the last time: It's not bossy when your mom has to keep reminding you to shower at least once a week. She's just helping you be a more accepted by the other kids in your class.

How are we bossy? We may have to be more emotionally manipulative because we can't rely on physical strength and threats.

There have actually been studies on why some women are perceived to be "bossy" when engaging in the same kind of activity men do and why those same men aren't considered "bossy". It ultimately has to do with the higher pitched voices most females have. Study subjects, both male and female, were more likely to interpret a female giving orders as "bossy" when a male subject saying the exact same thing in the same tone wasn't. This is party because our brains associate higher pitched sounds with danger and partly because culturally we've been conditioned to expect women to be more soft and less aggressive.

Both genders operate under a biological premise for our species. This is; we are a competitive species with a hierarchical society. We are a social species and we compete to determine our position in our social hierarchy. Those at the top of the hierarchy get to call the shots, get to accumulate more resources, and improve their selection of sexual partners.

If females seem unusually bossy to you, it is simply because you don't expect them to be competitive. You are expecting women to be submissive and support the status quo. However this is not an accurate perception. Women are just as competitive as men. Women will take advance of any opportunities available to them. However, in the past women had fewer opportunities, and men were more aggressive and intimidating. As society promotes greater equality and greater opportunities for women, you will find that both genders pursue greater status in their social hierarchy with equal determination.

Think of it this way: How many things can you come up with that a woman can do that a man can't. If a man needs something like that done, he has to convey his wishes to a woman. Thing is, men CAN clean the house, men CAN change a diaper etc etc. So one by one, other than "have my baby", there are very few things that men can reasonably say "I can't do that, you have to do it for me."

So - if a guy tries to tell a woman to do something, he is a failure because he should be able to do it himself. The mindset changes: If he tells her to do something, he is a cross between being a prick and/or being dependent.

But there remain a large number of things that we expect women to ask men to do, all variations of "open this jar for me". Women are used to being considered dependent. When we say that a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle, we're assuming that there is always somebody bigger/stronger/whatever to get things done, and what we're really saying is that a woman needs a SPECIFIC man like a fish needs a bicycle.

Our society is used to having women ask for help. It discourages men from asking for help.

After awhile, "could you open this jar" becomes "open this jar". And yes, there is a sense of entitlement that comes with that, equating to getting angry when the jar doesn't get open.

We have our reasons, but it isn't always apparent to those in the line of fire.
