Sore throat caused by tonsils?

My friend has a sore throat and he hasn't gotten his tonsils out. Is it because of that?

Update:

He isn't sick, either.

Sorry? You really think that all sore throats are caused by tonsillitis, or that everyone should routinely have their tonsils removed?

He has a sore throat. Which can be caused a million things, but if he's not 'sick' it's likely a cold or a dry throat, or a very mild virus.

The great majority of people under the age of 70 have their tonsils.
