Not bad, it has been usual practice to have 3 months worth of your normal bills saved up just in case.

You have to realize one thing, $1,000 saved is absolutely nothing. Most 60 year olds only have $15,000 saved for retirement. They are in big trouble. If you are 30 years old, you'll need to save an average of $3,000 a month in order to have enough money to live comfortably for the rest of your life when you are 60 years old. So no matter what age you are, if you only have $1,000 in the bank right now, you are going to be in big big trouble when you are ready to retire. A thousand dollars is not a lot whatsoever.

Not especially since rents in most areas are quite high. But it depends on your life situation. If you are a teen living at home with minimal expenses, it's not a huge amount but it's a goodly sum.

It depends upon your cash flow and how much you spend. When I need to write a big check (or electronically transfer money), I might have thousands in it, and when I have no need to write a check, my balance might be $100.
