is it theoretically possible to change one element into another?

Yes, it's possible to make gold out of base metals if you know how.

Our sun does it all the time, converting Hydrogen to Helium
- busterwasmycatLv 710 months ago
it is the entire reason for our existence; we could not be if it was not possible (everything would be hydrogen). The sun does it by combining smaller elements into larger ones. The reverse also happens fairly regularly even if only in small quantities, where a larger element changes into a smaller one.

Theoretically, yes. In practice, no. It requires a great deal of equipment and energy (and therefore money), so hardly anyone does it besides CERN and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and maybe somewhere in Russia.

Not just possible, they do it all by themselves.
- ZirpLv 710 months ago
Not just theoretically. It happens in all stars and nuclear reactors

atoms are sorted into elements by the number of protons in their nucleus.. each element is a different # of protons.
ordinary chemical reactions do not involve the nucleus of atoms. They are simple rearrangements of electrons. Nuclear events (fission and fusion) do involve the nucleus and as a result atoms are "changed" from one element to another during nuclear events.

How do you think helium came to be. It’s 2 hydrogen fusing to form helium. But that’s just simple elements.
With the super collider, it might be possible. You take 2 elements, shoot at each other at high speed and hope that in the collision, the protons from each element would fuse together to make a different element.

Depends on the element. Something like uranium can be changed to lead. While it is not yet possible to change that lead into gold. It has been done on a tiny scale through nuclear fusion and fisson, but not on any practical scale.

Yeah, with nuclear fission or fusion.
