Can you help me with English please?

Some of the excess amino acids you eat can be converted into glucose. This "costs" energy, which your body gets from the burning of fat.

What does "costs" mean in this case?

Thanks!

It means that it requires ("costs") energy to convert amino acids into glucose. The energy is supplied by the burning of fat.

It is an idiomatic usage and means that to achive the conversion you need to expend (use) energy and that comes from fat burning.
