Jesus didn't 'hang out' with sinners. He sat down to eat and drink with them in order to convince them of their need for repentance. He was accused, (like 'fake news'), of being a sinner by association or sanctioning their behavior just by His willingness to talk to them.
Jesus also pointed out the hypocrisy of those making the accusations by reminding them that they accused John the Baptist of being 'evil' and 'demon possessed' for the opposite reasons, living outside of the community of sinners in the deserts and calling people to leave behind their lives and repent before returning in right standing with GOD.
With evil, you can't really ever win. You are always wrong and always judged for whatever you do, say or for whatever associations you have or don't have. That is why those driven by evil cannot truly 'love' at all, until they deal with this 'elephant in the room.' Creating demographics to double down and defend the 'elephant' only compounds the evil.
