What are the circumstances under which a woman stands up when a man enters the room?

    If he is head of state. If he is on flag Corp duty, carrying the national flag. If she is military and he outranks her (I'm just guessing on that one.) In any professional setting where she wishes to show respect.

    The old fashioned rules that outlined different roles for ladies and gentlemen were meant to apply in social settings. Once women entered the workforce on an equal footing with men, those practices had to go away. However, some people still prefer to follow those customs in social settings.
