Under the Marshal Plan the US sent the Army Corps of Engineers to work in Japan whereas the UK just took money and managed its own reconstruction.

America put in hundreds of millions of dollars into rebuilding Japan after the war.

Japan already had the labour they just needed the money and materials to rebuild.

In the UK a lot of people were involved in the armies of occupation of Germany, or on National Service. The UK had an empire it could call on to fill vacancies as the ecomnomy switched over from war production to reviving industries for export to boost the economy. Japan did not have such concerns. Unlike the Japanese, the British could choose their work and there were shortages in jobs that nobody wanted to do. A lot of pele came to work in the new NHS and the administration of the welfare state. London Transport for example shipped in workers from Jamaica and their decendants are still working on the system.

  • It didn't need the buggers and they still aren't wanted.

  • Japan has always been reluctant to accept migrants - it just isn't part of their culture. Having said that, I cannot think of many nations whose populations would have wanted to move to Japan in 1945. Japan had just lost a war in which they had committed atrocities against their neighbours, their Empire (which was only ever Japan itself) was in smithereens, and the Japanese people's lack of welcome would have been compounded by embarrassment at their reduced circumstances.

Because much more of the UK was destroyed in German bombing than in Japan.

That's not actually true.ย  Japan was MUCH more heavily bombed (even if you don't include the atomic bombs).
