It cheaper to maintain a houseboat or an actual home?

Maintenance for a boat is much higher. Add to that mooring fees, (which can be about half what you'd pay for rent on a normal house) and the costs can be higher for much smaller accommodation.

People who want to live on a boat so that they can avoid taxes usually neglect to account for the tax that must be paid to Neptune, King of the Sea. He requires that you maintain the engine and/or sails, scrape off barnacles, get up into drydock once in a while for major repairs, and be prepared to deal with the very worst kinds of weather. He seriously recommends that you understand navigation, seamanship and knot-tying. Neptune COLLECTS his taxes!

2. The day he buys his boat.
1. The day he sells it.

Depends on where you are - marina fees aren't cheap.Generally the house boat is smaller than a house. Build a house the size of the houseboat & it will be a lot cheaper & easier to maintain

The biggest expenses are real estate taxes for houses and docking fees for houseboats. The ordinary maintenance and upkeep is much cheaper for houseboats. No grass to cut, no snow to shovel.

An actual home is cheaper to maintain.

In New Orleans, sadly we deal with both on occasion.
