How do you deal with a compelx 17 year old boy, or straight to the point, are all 17 year olds complex, especially toward their mom?

Update:

I meant "complex", sorry, my bad.

The years of transition from childhood to adulthood are painfully complex. Young people are torn between wanting to be independent adults completely detached from their family and also wanting the kind of simply secure life they had as children before all these disruptive changes started happening to them. They're always uncomfortable, afraid that their family will mess up the way they relate with their friends, afraid their friends will make things awkward with their family. This kind of being pulled two ways at once makes people angry, resentful, and even a little crazy.

There are lot of books on dealing with teens at the library and some of them are very helpful.
